Prepare your lawn for summer

Spring is a great time to prepare your lawn for summer. Here are our top tips to get you started:
Use a garden fork to aerate the lawn. This is best done after heavy rain has fallen and soaked the soil, making it easier to penetrate. Aerating your lawn stops the soil from becoming compacted and allows water and fertiliser to absorb deep into the root system.
Regular mowing will keep your lawn healthy. Keep the mower blades high to protect the root system and maintain moisture in the soil. Long, thick grass will make it difficult for weeds to establish.
Weed and Feed your lawn before the weeds start to seed and spread. Fertilising your lawn in spring will keep it strong and health over the hot summer months. Your local nursery will be able to advise you on the best product for your lawn.
Water your lawn less often but with with deep soakings. As the warmer weather arrives this will encourage a stronger root system. Applying wetting agents will also improve water retention.
