Winter Gardening
Posted on June 03, 2016
This winter prepare your garden for the cold weather with a thick layer of mulch to hold in the last of the autumn warmth in the soil and ward off frost. Make the most of your mulching by cleaning up garden beds beforehand - removing weeds, pruning old, dying and dead foliage off plants and removing debris that will not break down under the mulch, such as large sticks.
Adding good quality soil wetting agents and fertilisers before mulching will give the soil a much-needed boost and help improve water take up and retention throughout the year.
Get on top of those weed infestations over winter as the cool weather slows down growth rates and makes your job just that little bit easier. Better yet, come spring, the rest of the garden can flourish without competition for water and nutrients.
Some other winter gardening tasks:
- Collect and remove the last of the autumn leaves from beds and paths.
- Transplant and relocate plants to new locations if required.
- Winter pruning of roses, fruit trees and perennial plants.
- Pruning and shaping of deciduous trees.
Happy gardening!
